Common Name: Erect Crested Penguin

Scientific Name: Eudyptes sclateri

Physical Description: The Erect Crested Penguin is a type of bird. It is very small, having an average height of 50-70 cm and an average weight of 2.7-5.2 kg. It has a white underbelly and a black head and back, and long yellow eyebrows that stand up in an erect manner.

Foods: Mostly squid and krill. Little is known about the Erect Crested Penguin's eating habits.

Breeding: The Erect Crested Penguin finds a mate and after a long courtship breeds on rocky shores, usually laying the egg on bare rock. A couple will lay two eggs, but the first egg is much smaller and almost never hatches. The second egg is much larger and is the one that hatches into their young.

Country: New Zealand, on the Bounty, Campbell, Aukland and Antipodes Islands

Range(Past and Present): The Erect Crested Penguins are only found on the islands listed above, though very few are still found on the Campbell and Aukland Islands.

Nesting Zones: This species of penguin nests along the rocky shores of the islands it lives on.

Migration(?): After breeding and then moulting their feathers, the Erect Crested Penguins do not travel inland and their sea distribution while migrating.

Hibernation: This bird does not hibernate.

Predators: Because this species lives on very small, isolated chains of islands, it does not have any major predators.

Interspecies Relationships: Some populations of Erect Crested Penguins nest in areas not far from Rockhopper Penguins.

Endangerment: The Erect Crested Penguin's population has declined due to a small, rescricted breeding range of small island chains.

Protection: Currently there are no major steps being taken to protect the Erect Crested Penguin, and no major agencies in New Zealand or any other part of the world have taken up the cause. It is hard to change increase their habitat because of the small size of the island chains they are found on.
