  • The panda's diet consists almost entirely of bamboo but they will eat other foods when available such as fish, eggs, and various fruits
  • Pandas give live birth and the newborns are hairless, pink, and blind

Habitat:
  • The panda lives in the mountain ranges of central China
  • The pandas historical range was most of the lowlands and highlands of eastern China
  • Pandas live in broadleaf and coniferous forests with large amounts of bamboo. They generally stay between 5,000 and 10,000 feet
  • Pandas do not hibernate or migrate
  • Recent studies show that small groups of pandas may share large territorries
  • Pandas are not predators and tend to keep to themelves unless provoked

Problems:
  • Increases in farming and large scale forest clearing have pushed the pandas into the mountains and out of their previous lowland habitat

Solutions:
  • China has established over 50 panda reserves and measures are being taken to increase this and expand their habitat
  • Many zoos have started to breed pandas in captivity
  • The World Wildlife Foundation is helping to expand the pandas habitat and population
